This on-line catalog of Film, Media and Video resources was compiled primarily for the benefit of Emory faculty, staff, students and visitors interested in African Studies. It contains over 850 film and video titles from Emory's existing library collections. They cover the continent and deal with topics ranging from literature, politics, art, and religion to wildlife.
In September 2004, the online catalog became a searchable database. It allows searches on titles, years and keywords. A keyword search covers all parts of a catalogue record, including the title and abstract. Using the search interface above, you have the option of viewing the entire catalog or searching the database of titles.
The on-line version of the catalog has two sections:
New acquisitions: new to Emory's collections for the current calendar year; this includes titles that were on order and more.
Film and Video Catalogue: the main body of materials in Emory's collections.
The current on-line catalogue was updated last to cover titles acquired up to summer 2008. The Institute of African Studies discontinued the catalogue in 2009 due to staff reductions, but the Emory library catalogue has begun to mark all these titles and all relevant new acquisitions as "African Studies Films". To identify Africa-related film and media resources added to the collection after August 2008, please see the library catalogue.
Emory's holdings included nearly 100 African feature films in 2008. With a few exceptions, African directors have usually made films in and about their countries of origin. The country listed in the topic keywords for an African feature film, then, usually refers both to the film's setting and to the director's nationality. Most items listed here are available at Woodruff library's Heilbrun Music and Media Library; locations can be verified through the EUCLID library catalogue. We hope you find this catalogue helpful in learning and teaching about Africa. We welcome your suggestions and comments.
