Graduate students pursue their degrees in departments allied with the Institute of African Studies, particularly the departments of Anthropology, Art History, and History. Graduates have gone on to highly successful careers at some of the very best colleges and universities in the country: Yale, Princeton, Brown, Rutgers, and many, many others.
Faculty and students convene together for the African Studies seminar, which is based on critical discussion of pre-circulated papers by visiting scholars and Emory faculty and students. The seminar is also used as a venue for other presentations, and as a space for students to present prospectuses, fellowship applications, and to discuss their dissertation projects.
If you are interested in pursuing a Ph.D., you should contact faculty within discrete departments. You are also welcome to contact the Institute Interim Director, Nathan Suhr-Sytsma, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
