Condoms, Fish and Circus Tricks: The AIDS Pandemic in Sub-Saharan Africa (Videocassette : 47 min. )  [2002]
VHS 9182
Abstract: Shot in Malawi, South Africa and Zambia, this is a compelling documentary on the HIV/AIDS epidemic that is ravaging Southern Africa. It takes an intimate look at the people who are dying, those who are caring for them, and why this disease has had such a devastating impact on African society. In a remote village in Malawi, the struggle against AIDS is led by local volunteers who care for the orphan children and those that are dying, without medicines, clean water, or even rubber gloves. In a fishing village on Zambia's Kafue Flats the local fishermen earn their livelihood by selling their catch. When women don't have the money to pay, the men often trade their fish for sex. The result has been a huge surge of AIDS patients, overwhelming the local hospital which has only three doctors and three hundred beds. The film reveals a 'quiet revolution' is underway as young people are talking about sex and challenging traditional concepts of sexuality. Through performances in a street circus young people are spreading the message of AIDS prevention. It is these young people that offer hope for Africa's future.

Femi Kuti live at the Shrine (DVD : 87 min. )  [2004]
DVD 5042
Abstract: A live performance by Femi Kuti and his ensemble at the Afrika Shrine in the Kuti family's hometown of Lagos, Nigeria, where every Sunday Femi plays to a packed house of revelers. For decades, Nigerian icon Fela Kuti revolutionized afro-beat, a unique blend of driving funk and traditional African music that carried his message of liberation and dignity in the face of corruption. After Fela's death in 1997, his son Femi Kuti took over the afro-beat throne, and in 2000, Femi opened the New Afrika Shrine in Lagos. A community center during the day and venue for ecstatic concerts at night, the Shrine is Femi's home. Raphaël Frydman's documentary features private moments with the exceedingly charismatic Femi, interviews with his family, and plenty of live footage that captures the vibrant music and what it means to the community. Can't Buy Me, Femi intones while the horns propel the music forward, dancers undulate, and the crowd finds release from the troubled state of the country in the joyous celebration. Great news from a place where, against all odds, music and community matter more than sales figures and target demographics: the songs included in the movie were selected democratically by Femi's fans. Contains on DVD and one CD.

James' Journey to Jerusalem (Videocassette : 87 min. )  [2003]
V.CASS. VHS 8698
Abstract: In the imaginary village of Entshongweni, very far from the Western world, the young James is chosen to undertake a mission--a pilgrimage to Holy Jerusalem. At the airport, however, James is suspected of trying to infiltrate the country in order to work illegally and is jailed by the Israeli immigration authorities. This contemporary Candide is miraculously bailed out by a shady small-time businessman only to become part of his migrant labor pool. Undeterred, James perseveres in his religious quest, until he gets a taste of fortune by exploiting his employer's friends and colleagues for his own profit. Director Ra'anan Alexandrowicz offers an astute exploration of the economic, moral and spiritual hypocrisies of Western society through an evocative portrait of modern Israel's cultural and generational divisions. Topped with a moving and charismatic performance by South African actor Siyabonga Melongisi Shibe, James' Journey to Jerusalem stealthily layers these serious issues with biting wit and a lilting fairy-tale charm. In Hebrew, English and Zulu with English subtitles.

Maîtres fous (Les) (Videocassette : 29 min. )  [1955]
V.CASS. VHS 2566
Abstract: Describes the Haouka, members of a religious cult living in Accra, Ghana. Shows them living and working in Europeanized Accra and participating in a spirit possession ceremony. Documents the annual religious ceremony of the Hauku cult which was widespread in Niger and Ghana from the 1920's to the 1950's. Ceremony took place on a rural farm, where the Haukas entered into trance, and were possessed with the spirits, associated with their former Western colonial powers. Supplicants consult the gods through trance, and may receive advice about their problems and illnesses. They may also find support and comfort although they can also be reprimanded for wrongdoings. Hauka first began in the person of a soldier who witnessed the decimating of their West African troops by the Germans, despite their outstanding performance in battle. The Hauka was suppressed by the French and British, subsequent administrators of Niger. After protestations against this suppression the agreement was reached that they should limit their ceremonies to prescribed places. Today the Hauka movement has been absorbed into the traditional religious systems and there is now an end to the Hauka development.

On the Rumba River (DVD : 86 min. )  [2007]
DVD 8519
Abstract: Documentary about the history and continuing popularity of Congolese Rumba with legendary Congolese musician Wendo Kolosoy, affectionately known as 'Papa Wendo,' and members of his band, the Victoria Bakolo Miziki players. This is set against a backdrop of political turmoil that has afflicted the Democratic Republic of Congo for decades, and emphasizes the importance of music in this war-torn society. On the Rumba River introduces us to this legendary musician, along with veteran members of his band, the Victoria Bakolo Miziki Players -- including Antoine Moundanda (thumb piano), Joseph Munange (saxophone), Mukubuele Nzoku (guitar), and Alphonse Biolo Batilangandi (trumpet) -- who recount their own musical experiences and attest to their personal and professional respect for Wendo. The film also treats us to musical performances by the group, in rehearsals, impromptu jam sessions, and lively public performances. The film's exploration of the history and continuing popularity of Congolese rumba is set against a backdrop of political turmoil that has afflicted this African nation for decades, from the repressive regime (1965-1997) of Mobutu Sese Seko, an ongoing civil war, and a fragile contemporary peace. Extended views of Kinshasa slums and the rusted hulks of sunken boats along the Congo River reveal the physical devastation and grinding poverty of the Congo, and Wendo, in a reflective moment, laments the sad state of his country brought about by greedy politicians and fratricidal warfare.

Race Against Time: The AIDS Crisis in Africa (DVD : 48 min. )  [2002]
DVD 8057
Abstract: The AIDS crisis in Africa is an epidemic of staggering proportions. Thirty-six million people are infected with the HIV virus worldwide, with over 25 million of them in Africa, and a staggering number of Africans -- 17 million -- have died. This film is about the inspiring work of Canadian Stephen Lewis, the United Nations Special Envoy on HIV/AIDS in Africa as he searches for solutions to the pandemic ravaging the continent. Lewis describes the 'Herculean effort' that has begun to relieve the suffering. A global trust fund has been set up through the United Nations, which has grown to $1.5 billion. Drug companies have slashed their prices for anti-viral drugs for Africans, and there is now hope for the dying. After years of denial, there is now a new willingness on the part of African leaders to confront the disease. Lewis travels to Zambia and Kenya witnessing the challenges first hand as he talks to widows of AIDS victims, who are often infected themselves. In many instances, these ill women must care for their deceased relatives' children as well as their own, despite their desperate financial situation. On the plus side, he finds many creative, community-based educational programs that feature preventive 'safe sex' songs, dances and dramas.

Wandering Warrior (DVD : 56 min. )  [1996]
DVD 8247
Abstract: This is a unique story of a leap across cultural boundaries as a Maasai warrior from the pastoral valleys of southern Kenya adapts to life on the fast track in suburban Massachusetts. At age nineteen, Maasai warrior Mpeti Ole Surum met an American tourist on a safari in Kenya. This meeting changed his life forever. The American encouraged him to get an education and learn about the world beyond his valley. Changing his name to 'Tom,' he went to school and learned to read and write English. For several years he held different jobs at a resort, where he impressed guests by speaking about the Maasai culture. Possessed of the courage and strength needed to kill lions, he also had the talent of a natural showman. Sent abroad to encourage tourism, Tom quickly became a sought after lecturer, entertainer and talk show guest. Today he has several agents booking his performances at schools and universities across the United States. Even the most complacent high school students sit up and take notice when Tom bellows tribal incantations across the stage while dressed in full hunting regalia. A self-styled cultural ambassador, Tom also shares what he has learned of America with young Maasai. While he partakes of the bounty of American life, including Armani suits, a luxury car, and credit cards, he is still strongly attached to his tribe and its traditions.
